It is with special pride that the Portuguese Chess Federation announces that our country has been awarded the organisation of the 2024 World Veterans Championship. In its centenary year, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has shown full confidence in the FPX to organise an event on a global scale and we all hope that the event will be a success. The World Veterans Championship will therefore take place on the island of Porto Santo (Madeira) between 17 and 29 November and the Vila Baleira Hotel, where the event will be held, has long been prepared to provide participants and others involved in the championship with an unforgettable tournament.
The World Veterans Championship consists of two events, which award four titles, the Absolute and Women’s titles in the +50 age category and also the Absolute and Women’s titles in the +65 age category. Both competitions consist of 10 rounds.
The choice of Porto Santo for a veterans’ championship is fully justified, as the Golden Island is the perfect place to host this type of event. The mild autumn temperatures and the chance to enjoy the golden sands and sea of the seaside resort considered the best beach destination in Europe by the World Travel Awards, as well as the tranquillity and permanent contact with nature, make it the ideal place to play chess.
